Courses

The college imparts modern quality education in the faculties of Science, commerce, humanities and Arts at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Various professional/vocational courses under the directive of University Grants Commission have been started in the recent past. At present Biotechnology in the Botany Dept., Bachelor of Computer Application in the Mathematics Dept., Functional English in the English Dept., Geohydrology in Geology Department, B.B.A and B.Com in the Economics Dept., and Dietician and nutrition in the Zoology dept are currently running after being approved by the Chancellor’s office.

The Undergraduate courses are of three years Honours courses while the Post Graduate courses are of Two years duration. The Certificate course is of One year duration. The Examination of all the Courses is conducted by the Patna University.

Department

The college has several departments in following faculties :-

Under Arts Department the faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences has fourteen departments whereas Science faculty has altogether seven departments. The faculty of Commerce is attached to the economics department of the college. Each department has sufficient numbers of professors, Asst. Professors, Readers & Lecturers for teaching purpose. Non-teaching staffs have also been provided for routine working. The college/departments are required to execute their activities as per rules and regulations of the Patna University & the State Govt.

Acdemic Calendear

The college follows the academic calendar issued by the Patna University.

Examinations/results are regulated as per the rules and regulations of Patna University. The College however conducts its own entrance test of various vocational courses besides conducting the sent up tests in various classes.

For admission purpose detailed advertisement are published in the leading newspapers and the web site of Patna University besides the web site of the college for guidance of these who wish to seek admission in any of the course of the college. Applications are invited, scrutinized, entrance test (if required) is conducted and admission is done on the basis of the result of the test or merit list prepared. In case where no entrance test is required, the merit list is prepared on the basis of marks secured by the candidates in the qualifying examinations and displayed on the notice board of the college. Selected candidates take admission as per provisions made in the prospectus. The College follows the reservation of different categories as per the government/Patna University rules and regulations.

R & D Activities

All the Departments of the college have been equipped with the facilities for research according to the schemes of the Patna University as well as UGC. The teachers are encouraged to take research projects by applying to the UGC or on their own on various topics after getting approval from Patna University.

A Professor can have eight research scholars under him, a Reader can have 6 and a lecturer can take up to four research projects under him.

Laboratory and analytical facilities are available in College and the teacher and research scholar take advantage of facilities in any other department or college of the University. The research work leads to award of Ph.D. Degree, the examination and evaluation of which is conducted by the Patna University.

Placements

There is a Placement Cell in the college with a separate Office. The Cell at present has Dr M N Sinha, Head of Geology Department as its Coordinator. The Placement Cell has been actively seeking the cooperation of various multinational companies and several such companies have conducted placement interviews with high success rate. This Placement Cell is helped by the University Employment and Guidance Bureau.

In recent past, various national and multinational companies under campus placement programme have selected quite a good number of candidates from Patna University including several from B N College as well.

Distance Education

A study center of IGNOU for different undergraduate level courses with more than 3000 students is also functioning for students of distant places in the state. In the IGNOU both ARTS and Science students offer various courses. The college takes care of the counseling and workshop programmes of the IGNOU students. Our faculty members appropriately guide the students. The Regional Director and his assistants usually attend the inaugural and valedictory functions and the workshops.

The College provided the necessary facilities for the students of IGNOU in furthering their knowledge and learning.

E-Learning

Most of the department has been provided with latest computers to enable the students to develop their skill in E-Learning. The College is trying to have more computers and a central computing Unit for the use of students and faculties as well. The College has submitted a plan for this to the UGC for approval in the XI plan period.
